Sony warns PlayStation 5 shortage will continue into 2022

The chip shortage is affecting everyone

Published

on

Sony has already sold almost 7.8 million units of PlayStation 5 and estimates the sale of another 14.8 million this year. Despite the big numbers, the gaming console will continue to be in short supply as the demand is outrageously high.

According to a Bloomberg report, Sony told analysts it is challenging to keep up with strong demand. Earlier, Sony had predicted that supply would pick up in the second half of this year, but it no longer believes that. It didn’t set a new estimate for when supply will improve.

The global semiconductor shortage has severely affected production, and the delay is expected to last till 2022. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year, and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said at the briefing.

Although, analysts are worried that with lockdown over in most major markets, the surge in demand for home entertainment might already have peaked. Sony isn’t the only one facing issues, though. Microsoft’s Xbox lineup is equally affected, and so is Nintendo’s.

Nintendo warned last week that component shortages could affect production. It’s officially targeting sales of 25.5 million consoles in the year ending March 2022, down slightly from the previous year.

Assassin’s Creed Red is now Assassin’s Creed Shadows

First trailer coming this week

Published

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is one of the most anticipated titles of the franchise. After a brief stopover back to its stealthy roots with Mirage, the franchise is making a full-sized comeback with a flagship entry in feudal Japan. Now, Codename Red is finally ready to make its awaited debut. Ubisoft is revealing the title’s first trailer this week. Oh, and it’s renaming the game to Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Since Assassin’s Creed II, players have constantly asked for feudal Japan as a setting for the time-hopping series. Now, the franchise’s fans are finally getting their wish. Though details for the plot are still sparse to non-existent, roleplaying as a shinobi is almost a certainty.

Today, Ubisoft has officially announced that the first cinematic trailer for the upcoming game will come out on May 15 at 9am PT. As a cinematic trailer, the video likely won’t feature the title’s gameplay. However, it will surely be enough to whet our appetites.

If that’s not enough to fuel the hype, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will come from Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While Valhalla fully transitioned the series to an RPG, Odyssey was the perfect blend between stealth, open-world gameplay, and a traditional level-up RPG. That’s some pedigree backing Shadows.

Besides Shadows, Ubisoft has also announced a few more currently-unknown titles in Codename Hexe and Codename Infinity. With Shadows already on the horizon, it’ll be a matter of time before both titles make their inevitable debuts, too.

Pre-orders for Ghost of Tsushima on PC are getting cancelled

Because of the PlayStation Network requirement

Excited for the upcoming PC version of Ghost of Tsushima? If you’re looking for a complication-free experience on the platform, Sony has other ideas, especially if you live in a country without the PlayStation Network.

Last week was a bad one for the gaming community. Both Microsoft and Sony made decisions that countered what its users were expecting. Most notably, Sony decided to force Helldivers 2 players to link their PlayStation Network accounts in order to play the game. The massive outcry against the decision ultimately forced the company to backtrack.

However, Sony is still hellbent on fulfilling its PSN dreams. Over the weekend, gamers have noticed that the upcoming version is disappearing from digital storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store.

These platforms have gone even further now. As noted by Eurogamer, Steam and Green Man Gaming are automatically refunding pre-orders for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut in countries that don’t have support for the PlayStation Network.

Though users in these countries can easily create accounts by setting their country to a supported one, the inability to buy the game presents a new obstacle. The list of countries affected by the decision is still currently unconfirmed, being based on user reports. However, if the Helldivers 2 list is anything to go by, it includes the Philippines and Japan.

Ironically, developer Sucker Punch previously confirmed that players who only want to go through the single-player campaign should have no issue playing without a PlayStation Network account. Sony has seemingly gone further and included single-player gamers into their new ecosystem.
